The button push puts it in neutral........to start and rev her up......the button push's a plate out of the way of a gear cog allowing the throttle to move without it going into gear. Sometimes the plate sticks and a spring does not allow the button or the gear cog to come back into the locked position.

When I took my shifter apart to replace a neutral switch I noticed the gear cog/slot need a little grease lube to help her not to stick open.

Thought this might help if it ever happens to someone else.
