206LS 4.3 Prop Choice, Need to get on plane quicker.
 
I picked up a new to me 2005 Crownline 206LS equipped with the 4.3 V6. It is currently propped with an Aluminum 3 blade prop 14.25" x 21" prop.

With this prop it takes quite a while to get on plane, however it moves well when it is on plane.

I would like some recommendations on props to use to improve acceleration, I don't mind sacrificing top speed to be able to come out of the hole quicker and be able to pull tubes or a skier easier.

I have used Mercury's prop selector but it gave me 17 options and I would like to narrow it down a bit with other's experience.

First, you’ll get better performance switching to stainless. Stainless is more expensive, but also more durable.

The other thing would be to switch to a 4-blade. This will give more bite out of the hole.

If you have a decent dealer near you they might let you try before you buy.

Congrats on the new boat!

I think most people will tell you a 17" Merc Rev4 for hole shot.

I ordered a Turning Point 17" 4 blade aluminum prop for my 202 with the 5.0 and I'm interested to see how it works out. They claim SS performance. Most people will say go straight for the SS but I figured it was worth try for the price ~$120.

Congrats on the boat! I am thinking the previous owner never changed the prop when the engine was changed and dropped HP. A 21p seems like a lot of prop for any V6 in that size boat, especially the carb version. I would guess with the new engine it should have a 3-blade 19p...otherwise a 4-blade 17p.

Yea, unsure why it would be propped that way too. According to my google-fu it should be propped with a 19p.

The HP of the current engine is actually rated at 225, 5 over what the boat came with originally. Who knows how true that is though.

Anyone have experience with Michigan wheel branded stainless props? They are a good bit less expensive than the Mercury brand props.

Edit: This is my top contender. 4 blade 14-3/8" , available in a 16" or 18" pitch.

I agree with Mike. 21 pitch is way too much for that boat.

What RPM were you able to get the boat to at full throttle (WOT)?

To get to the right RPM range, I don't think you will want more than a 17P.

Once you get your options dialed in, I would try working with a local prop shop. I know around here there is one that will let you try a prop and exchange it for something else if it doesn't do what you want it to.

So, due to the re power (or a gauge problem) the tach is not working currently.

It is on my fix it list.

I will have to call around and see if anyone allows prop exchanges here, it is doubtful as I don't think the market is big enough here yet.

Hmmm...interesting on the HP. The carbed V6 Mercury engines are 190HP. MPI are 220HP. RPM at WOT is going to be your key. I have nothing bad to say about Michigan Wheel, so if you like their prices, then go for it. Same is true about Turning Point.

Ahh, I remember that now. If it were me, I would get the tach fixed and then get the right prop. Without knowing where you are on RPM, you are not going to be able to know where you need to go.

Do you know what WOT RPM is on that engine?

Specs are listed at 4400-4800

I am afraid that I am not going to be able to get a chance to test and tune with props, so I am unsure if having the tach will help me much.

I guess I could temporary install one of these for tuning purposes.
